3,767 Lives Lost in Nine Months to Road Crashes — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that 3,767 individuals lost their lives in 7,011 road accidents between January and September 2024. This was disclosed by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, during the launch of the 2024 Road Traffic Crash Victims Remembrance Week at St. John’s Evangelist Cathedral Church in Bauchi on Sunday.

The event, themed “That Day,” aimed to highlight the life-altering impact of road crashes on victims and their families. Represented by the Bauchi State Sector Commander, Istifanus Ibrahim, the Corps Marshal also revealed that 22,373 people sustained injuries of varying severity during the same period.

Nigeria’s Unique Challenge

Shehu Mohammed pointed out that Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa, faces a disproportionate burden of road traffic crashes. He emphasized the significance of the remembrance week, which serves to honor deceased crash victims and support those recovering from injuries.

“The day provides an opportunity to recognize the vital role of emergency services, spotlight the often-lax legal response to road deaths and injuries, and advocate for stronger measures to prevent such incidents,” he said.

He further stressed the need for better support systems for crash victims and their families while urging the implementation of evidence-based strategies to reduce fatalities and injuries.

Activities to Mark the Week

The remembrance week includes engagements at religious institutions, such as the Sunday church service and a similar event scheduled at a Jumaat Mosque on Friday. Shehu noted that these activities aim to leverage religious platforms to spread road safety messages and appeal to the conscience of road users.

He also called on governments at all levels to enhance vehicular safety through the Safe System Approach and urged road users to recognize their shared responsibility for road safety.

Stakeholders’ Commitments

Rev. Raphael Agbada commended the FRSC for its efforts, pledging the church’s support in spreading road safety awareness. “We will do all we can to join you in ensuring safety on the roads,” he assured.

The FRSC’s message serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of road crashes and the collective efforts needed to minimize their occurrence.
