DHQ Denies Navy Personnel Aiding Oil Theft in Niger Delta
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed allegations by Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, CEO of Tantita Security, that Nigerian Navy personnel are aiding oil theft in the Niger Delta. The DHQ described the claims as “cheap blackmail.”
Tompolo alleged that Navy personnel were undermining efforts by his security firm to curb oil theft and boost Nigeria’s crude oil production.
Military Response
Addressing the allegations during a biweekly briefing on military operations, Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, urged cooperation between the Navy and Tantita Security.
“Such allegations are laughable,” Buba said. “We should seek cooperation, not conflict. Both organisations are working toward the same goal—improving the nation’s crude oil production, which is vital to our economy. We must avoid unnecessary disputes and focus on achieving this shared purpose.”
He emphasized that the military is committed to fostering partnerships to combat oil theft and enhance national revenue.
Counterinsurgency Efforts
General Buba also addressed ongoing military operations across Nigeria, reiterating the armed forces’ mission to eliminate terrorist threats.
“Our objective is clear—to find and destroy terrorists wherever they hide,” he said. “We will continue to apply overwhelming military force to decimate them or compel their surrender. Many have already surrendered, and we are achieving our goals.”
Regarding the Lakurawa terrorist group, Buba said the focus remains on dismantling their operations rather than investigating their origins.
Attack in Abia State
Responding to reports of alleged military reprisals following an attack on a checkpoint in Abia State, Buba clarified that the military targets terrorists, not civilians.
“Our troops were attacked, resulting in three casualties. While there will be consequences for the terrorist group responsible, innocent Nigerians remain safe. We are a professional force, and our operations reflect that,” he assured.
Call for Unity
General Buba urged all stakeholders, including private security firms like Tantita Security, to collaborate with the military to address security and economic challenges. “It is time to move faster in the interest of the nation,” he concluded.
