Oyo Government Strengthens Efforts Against Illegal Arms, Trafficking, and Migration
The Oyo State Government has intensified its efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal arms, ammunition, and human trafficking, particularly in its border towns. The government also announced incentives for security personnel and citizens who assist in identifying and apprehending smugglers and traffickers.
Statewide Security Sensitization
Segun Adegoke, the Special Adviser on Homeland Security to Governor Seyi Makinde, outlined these efforts during a series of sensitization visits to border communities, including Iwere-Ile (Iwajowa), Saki West, Iseyin, and Ibarapa North Local Government Areas.
The security team, which included officers from the Department of State Security (DSS), Police, Immigration, Customs, and the NSCDC, met with local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and security personnel.
Adegoke highlighted the governor’s directive to address the dangers posed by the influx of illegal arms and migrants, citing recent incidents involving intercepted trucks carrying arms, ammunition, and irregular migrants.
The Dangers of Illegal Arms Proliferation
In his remarks, Adegoke emphasized how the spread of small arms and light weapons contributes to insecurity, fueling crimes like insurgency, organized violence, human trafficking, armed robbery, and kidnapping.
“The influx of illegal immigrants and arms poses significant threats to our collective security and socio-economic development,” he said. “We must work together as leaders to address these challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of our people.”
He called for heightened awareness among residents, urging them to report suspicious activities and refrain from supporting smugglers and traffickers.
Addressing Contributing Factors
Adegoke identified factors like inadequate border control, weak enforcement, and the state’s vast and porous border as key contributors to the illegal arms trade. He called for collaboration between security stakeholders to strengthen border surveillance and control.
He appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to use their influence to discourage illegal arms possession and to promote peace and unity, which would reduce the demand for weapons.
Commitment From Local Leaders
Local government chairmen and traditional rulers pledged to enhance their efforts to secure border towns and prevent illegal activities. They also promised to educate their communities about the dangers of arms proliferation and irregular migration.
Incentives and Professionalism
Adegoke assured security personnel of rewards for exceptional performance in apprehending offenders. He encouraged them to carry out their duties professionally and to collaborate in promoting a culture of peace.
The Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and tackling the root causes of insecurity through sustained collaboration and strategic initiatives.
