Nigeria Most Viable Country for Aviation Market in Africa, Says Keyamo
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has highlighted Nigeria’s position as the most promising aviation market in Africa. Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Keyamo cited the country’s large population, high traffic volume, and strategic location as factors positioning it as an ideal hub for aviation on the continent.
Opening Markets to Attract Investors
Keyamo stressed the need for Nigeria to open its aviation market to attract investors who can enhance the country’s infrastructure. He remarked, “Nigeria is the most viable country in Africa when it comes to aviation… Let us begin to attract people to come.”
Addressing the current state of aviation infrastructure, Keyamo acknowledged that while it is not yet at the desired level, the country should not wait to showcase itself to potential investors. He emphasized that private sector investment is essential, as budgetary allocations alone cannot meet the funding requirements for large-scale infrastructure projects.
Keyamo also mentioned President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Fund, designed to provide counterpart funding for critical infrastructure, but noted that private investment remains indispensable.
Plans for Nigeria’s First Airshow
Keyamo announced plans for Nigeria’s first airshow, an event aimed at drawing global aviation stakeholders to explore opportunities in the country. He explained, “An airshow is when you open up the country for investors to come and display their wares.” He expressed confidence that hosting an airshow would serve as a catalyst for increased investment in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Tackling Airport Harassment
The Minister addressed reports of passenger harassment by security operatives at Nigerian airports, an issue he described as a concern for his ministry. Keyamo clarified that while these incidents are not caused by the aviation ministry, they tarnish the country’s image and the overall airport experience.
He revealed that complaints had been lodged with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to address the issue. According to Keyamo, the NSA has taken steps to improve monitoring by acquiring about 1,000 body cameras for use by security personnel at airports.
Keyamo concluded by reaffirming his commitment to creating an investor-friendly aviation sector while ensuring a safer and more welcoming experience for passengers in Nigerian airports.
