Court Dismisses Bobrisky’s Fundamental Rights Suit Against EFCC
A Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a fundamental rights suit filed by social media personality Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, known as Bobrisky, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bobrisky had sought N200 million in damages for “psychotic trauma” and N1 billion from the National Assembly, alleging a violation of his right to a fair hearing. He also requested the court to restrain the EFCC and the National Assembly from “harassing, detaining, or declaring him wanted.”
The case stemmed from allegations made by social media influencer Martins Otse, who leaked an audio recording claiming Bobrisky had paid N15 million to the EFCC to drop money laundering charges against him.
Delivering the judgment on November 28, Justice Alexander Owoeye ruled that Bobrisky’s claims of rights violations lacked merit and were unsupported by credible evidence. Justice Owoeye noted that the evidence presented by Bobrisky did not substantiate the claims of violation of fundamental rights against the EFCC or the National Assembly.
“I hold that the claims of violation of fundamental rights against the 1st and 2nd Respondents were not made out of the affidavit evidence placed before this Court. The Applicant’s claims lack merit and are accordingly dismissed,” the judge stated.
The court also refused to award damages against the EFCC, and Bobrisky’s suit was dismissed in its entirety.
