Economic Reforms: ‘Don’t Japa’, Cardoso Begs Nigerians

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has appealed to Nigerian youths not to leave the country amid its ongoing economic reforms. Speaking at the 59th annual Bankers Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos, Cardoso assured that the country’s current policies and reforms are designed with the long-term economic development of the nation in mind.

Cardoso emphasized that the decisions made by the Central Bank are meant to serve the best interests of the Nigerian people, and he reassured that efforts are underway to build an environment where businesses can thrive. He urged young Nigerians to stay and be part of the solution rather than seek opportunities abroad. According to him, leaving the country could lead to selling assets cheaply, which could be seized by outside investors looking for bargains.

He further emphasized that Nigeria’s economic reforms, though challenging, are aimed at addressing current issues while preparing for future growth. Cardoso stressed the importance of collective effort in building an economy where everyone—individuals, businesses, and communities—can prosper. He also highlighted growing interest from international investors, which he believes signals a positive outlook for the country’s future.

“Now is not the time to leave. Stay and be part of the solution. There are opportunities emerging, and we, who are here, should seize them for the better things to come,” Cardoso said, reinforcing his message of hope and collaboration for a brighter economic future.
