IGP Orders Investigation Into Kogi Boat Mishap
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation into a tragic boat incident in Kogi State that resulted in significant loss of life. The incident occurred on Friday along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area. The boat was carrying over 160 passengers, of whom 24 were rescued, while others are still missing.
In response to the tragedy, IGP Egbetokun extended condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, especially to the families of the victims. He emphasized that the investigation, which will be led by the Force Marine Officer, aims to determine the cause of the mishap, identify contributing factors, and propose actionable strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The IGP reassured the public of the police force’s commitment to coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure a swift recovery of the missing passengers. He also urged waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department to implement and enforce safety measures that will protect passengers and operators.
