Okpebholo Swears In 3 Judges Omitted by Obaseki Administration
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three judges who were previously excluded by the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. In May of this year, Obaseki had sworn in five judges from the same batch, leaving out three who had been recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Edo State Government House, where Governor Okpebholo emphasized his commitment to addressing the issue, recalling his promise made during his inaugural speech to correct the oversight.
Governor Okpebholo pointed out that, despite being cleared and recommended by the NJC in June 2023, three of the eight recommended judges were not sworn in under the previous administration, creating a gap that he felt needed to be rectified. “No one should be discriminated against, marginalized, or excluded for personal reasons or because they lack a godfather,” he stated.
He further reiterated the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary, noting that the newly sworn-in judges must maintain high standards of conduct, resolve disputes fairly, uphold the rights of citizens, and ensure that justice is served. “As judges of the State High Court, you are expected to be beacons of hope and uphold the integrity of the judiciary,” Okpebholo emphasized.
The three newly appointed judges are Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe.
In her response on behalf of the trio, Justice Osa expressed gratitude to the governor for fulfilling his promise so early in his administration. She assured the governor and the people of Edo State that they would dispense justice impartially, without fear or favor, and pledged to serve with integrity.
“We assure you that we will dispense justice without fear or favour,” Justice Osa stated. She also prayed for the success of Governor Okpebholo’s tenure and the continued advancement of justice in the state.
