Gov. Sanwo-Olu Signs Lagos Electricity Bill into Law
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially signed the Lagos Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant milestone in the state’s energy sector. The signing ceremony took place at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, with the attendance of Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat, members of the State Assembly, and key members of the state executive council.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the Lagos State House of Assembly for its prompt action in passing the bill, emphasizing that the new law will drastically improve the socio-economic conditions of residents by ensuring a steady and reliable power supply across the state. He noted that the bill had been in development for several years and that its passage would now guarantee Lagosians uninterrupted electricity.
The state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, explained that the new law will introduce an additional electricity grid for Lagos, effectively putting an end to the frequent blackouts that have long plagued the state. He also mentioned the creation of the Host Community Development Trust Fund, aimed at enabling communities to develop their own power plants.
The Lagos Electricity Law of 2024 is part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader strategy to address energy sector challenges and stimulate economic growth. The law aims to establish a well-regulated electricity market, promote energy efficiency, ensure access to affordable and reliable electricity, and support the integration of renewable energy sources. It is designed to foster investment, competition, and innovation in the sector while ensuring that even underserved areas are electrified, contributing to the state’s sustainable development.
