Peter Obi Advises FG on Tax Reforms: “Don’t Rush, Allow Public Debate”
Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and politician, has urged the Bola Tinubu administration to involve the public in a national debate before finalizing the tax reform bills. Obi made this call in a statement shared on his official X account on Monday.
While acknowledging that tax reforms are crucial for the country’s development, Obi stressed that such reforms must be thoroughly debated and deliberated upon by the public before any decisions are made. He emphasized the importance of conducting public hearings, allowing Nigerians from all sectors to engage in meaningful discussions.
“Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate,” Obi stated. “Public hearings on tax reform are essential. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.”
He further argued that issues of such significance require extensive consideration and should not be rushed. “Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs. This will ensure that the broadest spectrum of public opinion is reflected in the policy.”
Obi also pointed out that tax reforms should not only focus on government revenue generation but must consider the broader impact on the country’s regions and sustainability. He stressed the need for the government to engage the public and secure their support for any policy changes, noting that trust and legitimacy are vital for the success of reforms.
“Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance. Without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail. Let us prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in charting the path forward,” Obi concluded, advocating for a participatory democracy.
The tax reform bills have sparked controversy since their introduction, with northern governors particularly calling for their withdrawal.
