NITDA, NUC Partner To Enhance Digital Literacy In Varsities

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) have initiated discussions aimed at boosting digital literacy across Nigerian universities and other educational institutions.

This collaboration was highlighted during a courtesy visit by NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, to the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, in Abuja on Tuesday. Both leaders explored ways to integrate digital skills into the educational curriculum to transform the Nigerian education sector.

In his remarks, Inuwa emphasized the importance of digital literacy, stating that by partnering with the NUC, Nigeria could “leapfrog” in the digital space and drive economic growth by enhancing human capital. He shared NITDA’s vision to make Nigeria a global exporter of digital talent, leveraging its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan, which focuses on eight pillars aimed at digital inclusion and talent development.

He also noted that President Bola Tinubu has set a target of 70% digital literacy by 2030, but with the infusion of digital skills in education, NITDA believes the nation can exceed this goal. The agency is already working with Nasarawa State to incorporate digital literacy initiatives and aims to ensure all Nigerians develop digital fluency for economic inclusion.

Inuwa called for increased investment in research, citing it as essential for solving national challenges. He also mentioned NITDA’s collaboration with UNESCO and the European Union on the National Digital Literacy Framework.

NUC’s Maiyaki echoed the significance of this partnership, highlighting that it would be a game-changer for Nigeria’s digital economy. He pointed out that the NUC has already incorporated aspects of digital literacy, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and skills acquisition into the university curriculum. He expressed confidence that the partnership with NITDA would help propel Nigeria’s digital economy forward and contribute to the nation’s progress.
