Borno Deputy Governor and Over 100 Others Escape Plane Incident

Borno State Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur, along with over 100 passengers, narrowly escaped a potentially tragic incident when a Max Air aircraft caught fire shortly after takeoff from Maiduguri International Airport.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, when the aircraft, which was en route to Abuja, experienced engine failure caused by a bird strike approximately 10 minutes into the flight. The pilot and crew managed to perform an emergency landing back at Maiduguri Airport, averting disaster.

A Max Air staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the details of the incident on Thursday morning. The staff member explained, “Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft collided with a bird, causing one of the engines to catch fire. The pilot acted quickly to ensure the safety of all passengers.”

After the emergency landing, passengers were reportedly shaken and many opted to retrieve their luggage and return home instead of boarding another flight. However, Max Air quickly arranged an alternative aircraft from Kano to safely transport the deputy governor and other passengers to Abuja.

In addition to the deputy governor, other government officials on board included a commissioner, special advisers, senior special assistants, and various aides.

The affected aircraft remained grounded at Maiduguri International Airport for repairs, and investigations into the incident are underway. Airport authorities have assured the public of their commitment to passenger safety and commended the crew for their professionalism in handling the emergency.
