CDS: Military Actions Alone Are Not Enough to Achieve National Security

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has emphasized that military action alone is insufficient to attain national security in Nigeria. He stated that military efforts account for just 30% of the overall strategy for national security, while the remaining 70% depends on political, socio-economic, and developmental interventions.

General Musa made this statement during the Roundtable Discussion on Nigeria’s Security and National Interest, organized by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, in collaboration with Defence Correspondents in Abuja. The theme of the discussion was “National Security and National Interest: A Development Journalism Approach for the Defence Beat.”

He explained that while military strength and addressing immediate threats are important, national security must be understood through a broader lens that includes socio-economic, political, and environmental factors. General Musa highlighted the role of development journalism, which focuses on the country’s social, economic, and political development, in advancing national security.

“The military’s role in ensuring national security is critical, but it must be complemented by efforts in other sectors. We need joint efforts to tackle insecurity, with a strong emphasis on socio-economic development and societal cohesion,” he said.

General Musa also acknowledged the significant role that journalism can play in promoting national security. He advocated for a collaborative approach between the military and the media to enhance national cohesion, stability, and security.

“Our national security should not solely depend on the strength of the armed forces,” he concluded. “It must be supported by an educated, healthy, and socially cohesive population, with development journalism playing a key role in strengthening Nigeria’s national interest.”
