House Destroyed as 9-Year-Old Causes Fire Outbreak in Kwara Estate

A fire outbreak on Thursday nearly destroyed a three-bedroom flat at the Mandate Estate, New Yidi road, Ilorin, Kwara State. The incident was caused by a 9-year-old child who was playing with matches, which ignited a mattress in the house and caused the fire to escalate quickly.

The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed the incident, with its spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, issuing a statement on Friday. According to the statement, the fire broke out on December 5, 2024, at No. 52 Mandate Housing Estate. The fire nearly consumed the entire flat, but the prompt response of the fire service helped prevent further damage.

The fire service spokesperson issued a strong reminder about fire safety, particularly during the holiday season when children are often home with limited supervision. Adekunle urged parents and guardians to keep matches, lighters, and other flammable materials out of children’s reach and educate them on the dangers of fire. He also emphasized caution regarding firecrackers, commonly known as “bangers,” as the festive season approaches.
