Federal Government Denies Detection of COVID Variant XEC in Nigeria
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a statement confirming that there is no evidence of the newly detected COVID-19 variant XEC in Nigeria. This comes after reports circulating on social media suggested that the variant had been found within the country.
In a statement signed by Mr. Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the ministry urged Nigerians to remain calm and adhere to standard hygiene practices. The variant XEC, which has been reported in 29 countries, is noted for its increased virulence and was recently detected in Australia. The ministry emphasized that no signs of the variant have been detected through the country’s robust surveillance systems at entry points and health facilities.
To prepare for any potential outbreaks, the Nigerian government has enhanced its Federal Tertiary Hospitals by setting up molecular laboratories, isolation centers, and intensive care units with ventilators. These measures aim to strengthen the country’s health response capabilities.
The ministry also clarified that a letter dated December 5, 2024, referring to the detection of the XEC variant in Nigeria, was false. It urged Nigerians to disregard such misinformation and instead rely on updates from official sources. Additionally, the ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing, to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
The government reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding public health and delivering uninterrupted healthcare services.
