Ghana’s Vice President Bawumia Concedes Defeat in Presidential Election

On Sunday, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) conceded defeat in the weekend’s presidential election, extending congratulations to his opponent, John Mahama.

Bawumia, addressing the media, stated, “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility.” He later confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had personally called Mahama to offer his congratulations.

Mahama, who ran for the presidency under the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was declared the winner, with Bawumia acknowledging that Mahama had secured a “decisive” victory. According to the NPP’s internal vote count, the NDC also triumphed in the parliamentary elections.

Bawumia’s campaign had been overshadowed by criticism of the government’s handling of Ghana’s economic crisis and rising living costs, which were central issues during the election.
