Trump Announces Plans to End Birthright Citizenship and Deport Undocumented Immigrants
In his first formal television interview since being elected President, Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to two of his most controversial campaign promises: ending birthright citizenship and deporting all undocumented immigrants in the United States.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump stated that he would move to deport every undocumented immigrant currently living in the U.S. over the course of his first term, calling it a necessary step. “You have to do it,” he said when asked if he would deport all illegal immigrants.
The president-elect also doubled down on his pledge to end birthright citizenship, which grants U.S. citizenship to any child born on American soil, a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Trump called the policy “ridiculous” and said he would attempt to end it “if we can, through executive action.”
Additionally, Trump voiced his frustration with NATO allies and reiterated his threat to leave the alliance if other member countries do not “pay their bills.” He stated, “They have to pay their bills,” and added that he would “absolutely” consider withdrawing from NATO unless member nations start paying their fair share.
These comments underscore Trump’s ongoing hardline stance on immigration and international relations, as he prepares for his presidency.
