Brazilian President Lula Da Silva Undergoes Brain Surgery
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, underwent successful brain surgery on Monday night in São Paulo to address a bleed on his brain, which was linked to a fall he suffered at home in October. According to a medical note published by the government, the surgery to drain the bleed was successful, and Lula is currently in stable condition, being monitored in the intensive care unit.
The medical team reported that the surgery went smoothly without complications, and Lula’s recovery is progressing well. Doctors are expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday morning to provide further details on his condition.
Lula had initially suffered a small brain hemorrhage and a head injury from a fall at home in late October, which required stitches. After experiencing a headache in late November, an MRI revealed the intracranial hemorrhage, prompting the decision to transfer him to São Paulo for the surgery at the Sirio Libanes hospital.
His injury had previously forced him to cancel a planned trip to Russia for a BRICS summit in Kazan, following medical advice to avoid long-haul flights.
The president’s office assured the public that Lula is currently “well” and is under close medical supervision as he recovers from the procedure.
