Flights Disrupted as Cargo Airplane Skids Off Abuja Runway
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have confirmed that all crew members are safe after a cargo airplane skidded off the runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, confirmed the incident, noting, “Due to an incident at the Abuja airport, passengers may experience some delays. Please remain patient and orderly.”
FAAN spokesperson Obiageli Orah issued a statement confirming that at 10:05 AM on December 11, 2024, an Allied Air Cargo aircraft, registered 5N-JRT, skidded off Runway 22 at the airport. The plane had five people on board, but no injuries were reported. All passengers were safely evacuated and taken to the FAAN clinic for further medical checks.
LEADERSHIP has learned that the airport’s emergency response team, along with accident investigators, are on site. The runway is currently being cleared, and operations are expected to resume shortly.
FAAN expressed gratitude to the aviation community and the public for their understanding and patience, adding, “We also request that all speculation be suspended until the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) releases its preliminary report.”
