Akpabio: Why Tinubu Made Wike a Minister

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has shed light on why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, as a Minister in his cabinet despite Wike’s affiliation with the opposition party.

Speaking during a book launch marking Wike’s 57th birthday in Port Harcourt, Akpabio commended Wike’s exceptional record as a public officer, describing him as a “workaholic” who has consistently delivered excellence in every role he has held.

Reasons for Wike’s Appointment

Akpabio highlighted Wike’s performance across various capacities, from his tenure as a local government chairman, Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, Minister, and two-term Governor of Rivers State, as the basis for his inclusion in Tinubu’s cabinet.

“Your performance as a local government chairman, Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Government, Minister, and two-term governor gave you the job. You have made us proud as the FCT Minister. In less than two years, you have turned Abuja into a huge construction site,” Akpabio said.

He praised Wike’s efforts in transforming Abuja into a “model city” and noted his commitment to governance, infrastructure development, and service delivery.

Celebrating Wike’s Leadership

Akpabio also paid tribute to Wike’s leadership qualities and resilience, which he traced back to his birth during Nigeria’s civil conflict in 1967. He commended Wike’s dedication to uplifting communities, focusing on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and sports development.

“As a two-term governor, you have been a leader of the people, a visionary who acts with purpose, and a friend whose care for others knows no bounds. The bridges you have constructed—both of steel and spirit—stand as testaments to your commitment to progress and unity.”

Acknowledging Wike’s Family and Legacy

The Senate President also thanked Wike’s family, particularly his wife, for their unwavering support, describing their partnership as an inspiration. He lauded Wike’s charisma and wit, emphasizing that his leadership is rooted in people-oriented politics.

“Now, let us take a moment to appreciate your infectious spirit, which has the power to lighten the gravest of discussions with your wit and charm. You remind us that politics is not merely a realm of policies and procedures; it is, at its core, about people—about laughter, camaraderie, and the shared joy of our communities.”

A Prayer for Wike

Akpabio concluded with prayers for Wike, expressing hope for his continued success and impactful service to Nigeria.

“Happy Birthday, Your Excellency, Chief Nyesom Wike, CON! It is my fervent prayer that the years ahead will be filled with even more splendid moments, and that the remainder of your journey be more glorious than all that has come before.”

This insight from Akpabio underscores Wike’s cross-party appeal and his reputation as a results-driven leader in the Nigerian political landscape.
