ICPC Chairman Warns Against Frivolous Petitions by Lawyers
The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has urged members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to avoid submitting frivolous petitions against anti-corruption agencies and judges during litigation processes.
Dr. Aliyu issued the caution on Monday while hosting the Chairman and members of the National Litigation Committee (NLT) of the NBA at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the ICPC Chairman, submitting unjustified petitions against commission officers or judges undermines the collaborative efforts required to combat corruption. “Writing unnecessary petitions against officers of the Commission and Judges without concrete justifications is improper, as we are all colleagues and partners in the fight against corruption,” he said.
He encouraged lawyers to explore appropriate professional avenues for resolving disputes with anti-corruption officers, emphasizing that frivolous petitions do not foster an environment conducive to eradicating corruption.
Dr. Aliyu assured the NBA delegation that the ICPC protects the rights of lawyers as well as suspects during investigations. “In ICPC, there is no harassment of lawyers. We ensure that the rights of lawyers are protected, as well as the rights of our officers in the course of their duties,” he noted.
He urged the NBA to promptly bring concerns to the Commission’s attention, adding that ICPC is committed to addressing such matters objectively. “We strive to maintain mutual professional respect and understanding in line with the law and expect the same courtesy from lawyers during their engagements with the Commission,” he stated.
NBA Committee’s Commitment to Collaboration
Earlier, the Chairman of the National Litigation Committee, Barr. Vincent Otaokpokpu, explained the purpose of the visit, noting that the Committee was established to protect the rights of lawyers while promoting their professional interests.
He informed the ICPC Chairman that the Committee seeks to collaborate with the Commission in combating corruption while safeguarding the rights of legal practitioners.
“The Committee was inaugurated with the responsibilities of advocating for lawyers’ rights, assisting in promoting their interests, and defending lawyers who face harassment or humiliation by law enforcement agents,” Barr. Otaokpokpu said.
Acknowledging the challenges the ICPC may encounter when dealing with some lawyers defending corruption suspects, he pledged that the Committee would educate its members on maintaining professional integrity while respecting the rule of law.
The Committee also expressed readiness to collaborate with the ICPC in litigation matters and other areas critical to the anti-corruption fight.
Emphasis on Anti-Money Laundering Compliance
Dr. Aliyu used the occasion to encourage lawyers to take anti-money laundering regulations seriously as outlined in the NBA’s professional guidelines. He emphasized that adherence to these standards is vital for maintaining the credibility of the Bar and advancing the fight against corruption.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to fostering mutual respect and collaboration in pursuit of justice and the rule of law.
