SAZU ASUU Suspends Strike After Agreement With Bauchi Government
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) has suspended its indefinite strike, which began on November 29, 2024, after reaching an agreement with the Bauchi State government.
The strike, declared to address grievances such as the lack of pension and death benefit schemes for SAZU staff and unpaid earned academic and excess workload allowances, was called off following fruitful engagements with Governor Bala Mohammed, who is the university’s Visitor.
In a statement released on Monday, ASUU SAZU Chairperson Comrade Auwal Nuhu announced the decision to suspend the strike, which was taken at an emergency congress meeting held on December 14, 2024, at the university’s Yuli Campus.
“These developments reflect the government’s dedication to advancing education in Bauchi State. The Congress commended Governor Mohammed for his proactive approach. As a result of these developments, Congress unanimously resolved to suspend the strike action with immediate effect,” the statement read.
Agreement and Vigilance
The suspension follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ASUU and the Bauchi State government, aimed at addressing the union’s demands.
Comrade Nuhu emphasized that while the suspension signals progress, ASUU will remain vigilant to ensure that the agreements are fully implemented.
“We are committed to ensuring that the agreements reached are honoured,” he added.
Background
The strike had disrupted academic activities at the state-owned university, drawing attention to long-standing issues affecting staff welfare and funding. The resolution underscores the Bauchi State government’s commitment to addressing challenges in the education sector and fostering a conducive learning environment.
Students and staff of SAZU can now look forward to resuming normal academic activities following the resolution of the impasse.
