75 Arrested for Street Hawking, Environmental Violations in Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has arrested 75 individuals across various parts of the city as part of its crackdown on street hawking and environmental violations.

The arrests were disclosed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, through his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Details of the Operation

Wahab stated that the arrests were made during a strategic overnight clearance operation, aimed at curbing public nuisance and promoting cleanliness in Lagos.

“In a strategic overnight clearance operation, operatives of LAGESC apprehended 75 individuals—five females and 70 males—suspected to be street traders and miscreants,” Wahab announced.

The operation targeted key areas, including:

  • Ikoyi & Lekki Axis: Lugard Avenue, Bourdillon Road, Glover Road, Admiralty Way, Lekki Estate Road, Ikate, and Oniru Road.
  • Victoria Island Axis: Ahmadu Bello Way, Saka Tinubu Street, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Violet Yough Close, Adeyemo Alakija, Eko Hotel Roundabout, and Ajose Adeogun.

Legal Actions

The Commissioner confirmed that the arrested individuals would face prosecution in accordance with Lagos State environmental laws.

“All suspects will be transferred to appropriate government facilities in line with relevant enabling laws,” Wahab said.

Hon. Wahab reiterated the state’s dedication to maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly environment for all residents and visitors. He also urged Lagosians to comply with state regulations and support enforcement agencies in achieving the government’s vision of a Greater Lagos.

Related Operations

In a separate raid conducted on Tuesday, 27 individuals, including 15 minors, were arrested for street begging in traffic. Wahab assured that all suspects in these cases would be handled in line with applicable laws.
