Police Arrest Ooni’s Ex-Wife Naomi, Confirm Death of 35 Minors in Ibadan Stampede
At least 35 minors have been confirmed dead following a tragic stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
Arrests and Investigation
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested several individuals in connection with the incident, including Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the main sponsor of the event and former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The police spokesperson, Osifeso Adewale, revealed in a statement:
“Sequel to the stampede incident recorded on Wednesday, eight individuals have been arrested for their various involvements.”
The list of those apprehended includes:
- Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, aged 31, main event sponsor.
- Fasasi Abdulahi, 56, Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan.
- Genesis Christopher, 24.
- Tanimowo Moruf, 52.
- Anisolaja Olabode, 42.
- Idowu Ibrahim, 35.
- Abiola Oluwatimilehin, 25.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Casualties and Injuries
The stampede claimed the lives of 35 minors, with six others critically injured and currently receiving medical attention.
Police Response
The command assured residents of heightened security in the area to prevent any exploitation of the tragedy by hoodlums. Osifeso stated that visible patrols and a strong police presence will remain in place to maintain order.

The police extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and injured, promising a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
