Wike Revokes Lands of Buhari, Abbas, Akume, and 756 Others Over Unpaid Fees
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked land allocations belonging to prominent Nigerians, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.
Revocations for Non-Compliance
A total of 759 individuals and organizations were affected, with the revocations primarily targeting landholders in the Maitama II District of Abuja. The action was taken due to the non-payment of Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) fees, as detailed in a public announcement by the FCT Administration.
Warnings to Additional Landholders
In a related development, Minister Wike issued a final warning to another 610 landholders, including notable figures such as House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, and former Senate Presidents Iyorchia Ayu and Ameh Ebute. Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno was also named among those at risk.
These individuals and organizations have been given two weeks to settle their outstanding fees or face similar land revocations.
Minister’s Stance
The decision follows Minister Wike’s repeated calls urging landowners, especially in Abuja’s highbrow areas, to clear their dues. The minister has warned of no tolerance for non-compliance with FCT regulations, reiterating that defaulters would face strict consequences.
Speaking on the issue, the Special Adviser to the FCT Minister on Media, Lere Olayinka, stated:
“The FCT Administration has shown significant patience in addressing these defaults. This action is necessary to ensure compliance and equitable development of the city.”
Implications
This move underscores Wike’s resolve to enforce fiscal responsibility and adherence to FCT laws, signaling that no individual or group, regardless of their status, is exempt from the rules.
