BREAKING: US Airstrike Kills Islamic State Leader Abu Yusif In Syria
The United States has confirmed the death of Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Yusif, also known as Mahmud, in a precision airstrike conducted in eastern Syria.
According to a statement from the US Central Command (Centcom), the operation also killed another high-ranking IS operative. The strike targeted a location previously under the jurisdiction of the Syrian regime and Russian forces, reflecting the US’s continuing efforts to disrupt IS activities.
Centcom Commander General Michael Erik Kurilla reaffirmed America’s commitment to countering the Islamic State’s resurgence.
“As stated before, the United States—working with allies and partners in the region—will not allow ISIS to take advantage of the current situation in Syria and reconstitute,” he stated.
Kurilla further warned of IS’s persistent efforts to destabilize the region, including attempts to liberate over 8,000 detained operatives in Syria.
“We will aggressively target these leaders and operatives, including those trying to conduct operations external to Syria,” Kurilla added.
This airstrike comes amid major upheavals in Syria following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad, who recently fled to Russia. Assad’s regime was toppled by the Islamist rebel coalition, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, in a rapid offensive that ended his 14-year rule and marked a significant shift in Syria’s volatile landscape.
The death of Abu Yusif marks another strategic victory in the ongoing battle against terrorism in the region.
