Edo Court Invalidates State Assembly’s Resolution, Reinstates LG Chairs

An Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City has ordered the reinstatement of the suspended chairmen and vice chairmen of the 18 local government area councils in the state.

Presided over by Justice Efe Ikponmwonba, the court issued the order following a suit filed by the affected local government officials, challenging their suspension by the State House of Assembly.

The court ruled to:

  • Reinstate the chairmen and vice chairmen to their positions.
  • Restrain the defendants, including Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Edo State Government, from taking further actions based on the Assembly’s suspension resolution.

Justice Ikponmwonba instructed that the status quo ante bellum as at December 12, 2024, be maintained until the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice filed on the same date.

The case was subsequently adjourned to February 17, 2025, for hearing. The court also directed that a hearing notice be issued and served on the defendants in the suit.
