NAFDAC Shuts Down 8 Outlets, Seizes ₦5bn Fake Rice

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down eight shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. These facilities were accused of producing and distributing counterfeit rice, thereby endangering public health.

In a statement on Friday, NAFDAC disclosed that the raid, led by Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, the agency’s Director for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), resulted in the seizure of over 1,600 bags of counterfeit rice, valued at approximately ₦5 billion. The operation also targeted markets in Wuse and Garki, Abuja, indicating the widespread nature of the illegal activity.

“This exercise was expressly directed by the Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, to ensure that counterfeit food products are removed from circulation and that those responsible are prosecuted,” Azikiwe stated.

Findings and Arrests

The NAFDAC team discovered counterfeit activities, including repackaging substandard rice into fake branded bags labeled with popular names such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, Optimum, and Tomato Aposo. These deceptive practices misled consumers into believing they were buying premium-quality rice.

Azikiwe explained that the operation was prompted by intelligence reports and complaints from genuine manufacturers. “These criminal elements exploit the trust consumers have in popular brands. We are determined to bring them to justice,” he said.

Several suspects were arrested during the raids and will soon face prosecution. Azikiwe emphasized the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for counterfeiting and its commitment to protecting public health.

Consumer Safety

NAFDAC advised Nigerians to be vigilant while purchasing food products, especially rice, during the festive season. Consumers are encouraged to verify product registrations and report any suspicious items to the nearest NAFDAC office for investigation.

The agency pledged to intensify its efforts in combating food counterfeiting, warning those involved in such illegal activities to desist or face the full weight of the law.
