Christmas: Gov Zulum Offers Free Transport and Cash to Non-Indigenes in Borno

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has provided free transportation to 710 non-indigenes residing in the state, enabling them to travel to their hometowns to celebrate Christmas and New Year with their families.

The initiative, flagged off on Saturday at the Borno Express Bus Terminus, began with 285 individuals traveling to various parts of Nigeria. The second and third batches, consisting of 285 and 140 individuals respectively, are scheduled to depart on Sunday and Monday.

Key Highlights of the Scheme

  1. Free Transportation: All 710 beneficiaries received complimentary transport to their destinations across the country.
  2. Cash Assistance: Each traveller was given ₦50,000 to aid in their festive celebrations. Additionally, 250 widows who chose not to travel were also provided ₦50,000 each.
  3. Consistency in Outreach: This annual gesture, ongoing since 2020, demonstrates Governor Zulum’s commitment to fostering unity and addressing the needs of all residents regardless of ethnicity or religion.

Commendations and Impact

Chief Ugochukwu Egwidike, chairman and zonal coordinator of the Ohanaeze All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Group, lauded Governor Zulum’s inclusive approach. He highlighted the governor’s consistent support for non-indigenes, which includes subsidized transportation within Maiduguri, assistance during crises like recent floods, and the sponsorship of Christian pilgrimages to Jerusalem.

The Oba of Yoruba in Borno, Alhaji Hassan Alao Yusuf, praised Zulum’s detribalized leadership, noting that the initiative reflects his commitment to equity and support for all residents, irrespective of religion, tribe, or political affiliation.

The transport scheme is part of the governor’s broader strategy to alleviate economic hardship and promote social welfare.
