Hoodlums Storm Edo LG, Bar Chairman From Entering Office
Tension flared on Tuesday at the Oredo Local Government Secretariat in Benin City, Edo State, when suspected thugs prevented the Chairman, Hon. Tom Obaseki, from accessing his office.
The hoodlums, who were armed and chanting war songs, had taken control of the council premises, forcing Obaseki to retreat after he attempted to resume work in the morning. The thugs had positioned themselves at key points within the secretariat, making it impossible for the chairman to enter.
Speaking to journalists about the incident, Obaseki expressed his frustration, saying, “I came here to continue my work as elected chairman of Oredo Local Government. I met a whole lot of thugs who have already overtaken the council.”
He further condemned the situation, calling it a “very disturbing trend,” and appealed to security agencies to take immediate action to resolve the issue. Obaseki emphasized that there was a restraining order in place regarding his suspension.
This development follows the ruling by the Edo State High Court, which nullified the suspension of Obaseki and 17 other council chairmen on Friday. The chairmen and their deputies had been suspended by the Edo State House of Assembly after a petition was filed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing them of gross misconduct and insubordination.
