Nnamdi Kanu Never Advocated For War, Says Vision Africa Boss
Bishop (Dr.) Sunday Onuoha, the president and founder of Vision Africa International, has stated that Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has never advocated for war in Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists at Vision Africa Radio station in Umuahia, Abia State, on Tuesday, Onuoha emphasized that Kanu’s agitation for Biafra stems from his opposition to the perceived injustice and marginalization of the Igbo people, not from a desire for violence.
“He has never called for harm or war,” Onuoha said. “The justice he seeks remains evident in the ongoing challenges we face today, especially the hunger and inequality afflicting the nation.”
A co-chair of the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace, Onuoha, who has met with Kanu several times during his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), urged for a shift in approach. He described Kanu as calm and resolute during their discussions, emphasizing the IPOB leader’s commitment to peaceful solutions.
“In our conversations, he has consistently remained optimistic about resolving issues peacefully,” Onuoha said. “He refrains from advocating violence or war, focusing instead on justice and equity for the people of the South-East.”
Onuoha appealed to the federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to consider a political solution for Kanu’s release, suggesting that Kanu could help bring peace to the region if freed.
He further called for a dialogue between the government and leaders of the South-East to find a political resolution to Kanu’s detention and address the underlying issues.
“If the government truly wishes to operate democratically, we must all advocate for political solutions,” Onuoha stated. “Legal battles only prolong the issue without addressing its root causes.”
The Methodist Church bishop also expressed concern about the dire economic situation in Nigeria and the recent stampedes in Abuja, Oyo, and Anambra States during the distribution of food palliatives.
Onuoha urged leaders at all levels of government to address the worsening hardship, warning that if the poor continue to suffer, it could lead to unfavorable consequences for the government.
