12th Idoma International Carnival Opens With Funfair in Benue
The 12th edition of the Idoma International Carnival has officially kicked off in Otukpo, Benue State, showcasing vibrant displays of music, culture, and tradition. The four-day event, held under the theme “The Rhythm of Our Heritage”, is hailed as the largest street party north of the Niger and promises an unforgettable cultural experience.
Preserving Idoma Heritage
In his welcome address, the founder of the Idoma International Carnival, Chief Edwin Ochai, emphasized the importance of culture in preserving the identity and legacy of a people.
“Culture is the rhythm by which people live, expressed through clothing, food, customs, and traditions. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, celebrating and preserving our cultural heritage is more crucial than ever,” Ochai said.
He noted that the carnival, first established in 2013 as the Agila Social and Economic Carnival, was conceived not for vanity but as a responsibility to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Idoma people. Over the years, it has evolved into the grand Idoma International Carnival, now a platform for cultural expression and economic opportunities.
Economic Impact
Chief Ochai highlighted the event’s positive impact on the local economy, bringing investment and growth opportunities to the region.
“Our mission is twofold: to safeguard the vibrant heritage of the Idoma Nation for future generations and to use this cultural platform to attract investment and economic growth to our land,” he said.
A Festival Like No Other
The carnival has become a symbol of unity and pride for the Idoma people, drawing attendees from across Nigeria and beyond. Over the next four days, the event will feature a lineup of performances, traditional displays, culinary exhibitions, and other cultural showcases, offering a unique blend of entertainment and heritage.
The Idoma International Carnival continues to stand as a beacon of cultural pride, proving that the richness of tradition can drive both community spirit and economic prosperity.
