Fire Guts FIIRO Facility, Plank Market In Lagos

A devastating fire broke out at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO) in Oshodi, Lagos State, on Wednesday, destroying the generator house. The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, which occurred late in the evening.

According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyinyolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the agency received a distress call at approximately 10:20 p.m. The response team was immediately activated from the Cappa Base in Oshodi and arrived at the scene just two minutes later.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that the generator house was completely engulfed in flames. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by overheating of the generator engine. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and no injuries were reported. The fire destroyed around 80 percent of the generator house, but efforts were swiftly made to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the facility. The blaze was eventually extinguished, and damping operations were completed.

In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a plank market on Pipeline Street in the Ikotun area of Lagos on Thursday, affecting a section of the market. Oke-Osanyinyolu confirmed that four shops were damaged in the blaze. The prompt response from LASEMA’s Dolphin Response Team from Igando, along with the coordinated efforts of other responders, helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Thankfully, no lives were lost, and there were no reported injuries.

At the time of reporting, the cause of the fire at the plank market had not yet been determined.
