Kano Market Shut Down Over Suspected Immoral Activities
The Garun Malam Local Government Area Council in Kano State has announced the indefinite closure of the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market due to concerns over illicit activities, including prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral behaviors reported to be taking place within and around the market.
Barr. Aminu Salisu Kadawa, the chairman of the local government council, confirmed the closure to journalists. He explained that the market had become a hotspot for criminal activities, including armed robbery, which contradicted its intended purpose as a marketplace.
“The market has grown notorious for prostitution and other immoral activities,” Kadawa stated. “It has become a haven for criminals and wrongdoers. In order to restore sanity, it is necessary to close the market indefinitely.”
The local government set a deadline of January 1, 2025, by which all traders and market occupants must vacate the premises. Kadawa warned that strict consequences would follow for those who fail to comply with the order.
“The closure is a necessary step to ensure peace and security in the area,” Kadawa added, emphasizing that the market’s operations would be thoroughly reviewed before any decision about reopening would be made.
