Days after being praised by President Bola Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accompanied by his two sons, paid a Christmas Homage to the President at his private residence in Lagos on Thursday.

Such visits are a common practice in Nigeria, where political office-holders, religious leaders, and other stakeholders often visit the President and Governors during festive seasons.

Earlier in the week, on Monday, President Tinubu had commended Wike for his performance in the nation’s capital since assuming office. The President described Wike’s efforts to make improvements as commendable.

During a presidential media chat on Monday, President Tinubu responded to questions about the controversies surrounding Wike, particularly regarding ongoing demolitions of illegal structures, land grabbing allegations, and the revocation of land titles. Tinubu expressed his support for Wike, calling him “a good man” and a “performing minister,” emphasizing his commitment to ensuring compliance with regulations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Nyesom Wike is a good man, he is a performing minister. Nigerians lack compliance, period!” Tinubu remarked. “We don’t pay our ground rents on time. We see compliance as inconveniences. I doff my hat for him.”

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, was nominated by President Tinubu for the position of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory on August 16, 2023. After his screening and confirmation by the Nigerian Senate, he officially assumed office.

During his Senate screening, Wike had assured that President Tinubu would not regret his nomination. “Mr. President will not regret nominating me as a minister in his cabinet,” Wike had stated.
