Tinubu Mourns Death of Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the government and people of India following the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu paid tribute to Singh’s dedication to enhancing the relationship between Nigeria and India. He recalled the historic visit of Prime Minister Singh to Nigeria in 2007, during which he addressed a joint session of the Nigerian National Assembly—a rare honor bestowed on only a few global leaders.
Tinubu praised Singh’s diplomatic efforts, which have remained a cornerstone in the development of Nigeria-India relations. He highlighted the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between the two nations during Singh’s tenure, which has continued to prosper, contributing to both political and economic growth.
The Nigerian leader also commended Singh’s work in advancing cooperation across various sectors, including defence trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT between the two countries.
In his message, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the people of India for celebrating the life and achievements of Singh, a distinguished economist and selfless leader. He acknowledged Singh’s significant role in steering India’s economic reforms during challenging global times.
President Tinubu concluded by praying that the late Prime Minister’s dedication to service would continue to inspire the people of India.
