Shettima Apologises Over Civilian Fatalities In Sokoto Airstrike

Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued an apology to the Sokoto State government and the families of victims who tragically lost their lives during a Christmas Day airstrike on December 25, 2024, aimed at the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The military operation, intended to target the insurgents’ logistics base, resulted in the deaths of at least ten villagers and left many others injured.

In a statement released on Saturday, Shettima, through his spokesperson Stanley Nkwocha, extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and the Sokoto State government. He described the incident as an unfortunate consequence of the ongoing fight against terrorism, where innocent civilians were caught in the crossfire. Shettima acknowledged the pain and grief caused by the tragedy and expressed his dismay over the loss of life.

He said, “I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, particularly to the families of those who lost their lives in the coordinated joint operation to eliminate the Lakurawa terrorist group at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities. I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred, and the pain that follows these difficult times.”

The Vice President further called for understanding, noting that the gallant Nigerian military personnel were sacrificing their lives to protect citizens from terrorism, despite the tragic mishap. He also sent heartfelt prayers to the families affected, asking for strength to cope with their losses.

Shettima reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to continuing its efforts to eliminate terrorism in the country, vowing that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will persist until terror groups and criminal elements are eradicated. He urged Nigerians, especially those in conflict-prone areas, to support the military, emphasizing that with public cooperation, the military can operate more precisely and effectively.

In addition to the Sokoto apology, Vice President Shettima visited Jigawa State on Saturday to express condolences to Governor Umar Namadi following the tragic deaths of his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, within a 24-hour period. Shettima, accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State and other government officials, offered prayers for the deceased and provided support to the grieving family.

During the visit to Jigawa, Shettima reflected on the inevitability of death and expressed empathy, saying, “We are all from Allah, and to Allah, we return.” He prayed that the deceased rest in peace and that their family find the strength to endure the immense sorrow of such irreparable losses.
