Tinubu Hails Guards Brigade for Securing FCT and Environs
President Bola Tinubu has praised the Presidential Guards Brigade for its dedication to securing the seat of power, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and its surrounding areas.
Speaking at the West African Social Activities (WASA) organized by the Guards Brigade to mark the end of 2024, President Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, commended Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, the Commander of the Guards Brigade, for his leadership in safeguarding lives and property.
“I want to acknowledge the outstanding commitment and efforts of the commander, officers, and men of the Guards Brigade in ensuring the security of the seat of government and the Federal Capital Territory,” President Tinubu stated. “Your readiness to go the extra mile in planning and coordinating your security duties is deeply appreciated. The ceremonial parades and operational efforts are invaluable.”
The President emphasized that the Guards Brigade’s approach to managing security threats in the FCT had not only ensured the safety of the President but also of citizens, visitors, and diplomats. He urged the troops to continue performing their duties with compassion and excellence, and to stay committed to the safety and security of the nation.
“Thank you for your dedication and sacrifices,” he continued. “You are shaping a safer tomorrow by securing today.”
Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the families and spouses of the personnel, recognizing their steadfast support that enables the soldiers to fulfill their duties.
“I am confident that the Guards Brigade will continue to rise to every challenge and keep the flag of the Nigerian Army flying high. Your diversity of experience, skill, and talent is an asset to both the Army and the nation,” he added. “Your exemplary dedication will inspire other soldiers to emulate your commitment.”
The President praised the Guards Brigade for their exceptional performance in protecting the seat of power, acknowledging their ongoing success in securing the FCT. “While there have been no incidents in Abuja, your efforts in safeguarding the capital are commendable, and we will continue to support you,” he said.
Earlier, Brigadier General A.O. Onasanya, Commander of the Guards Brigade, explained that the 2024 WASA event was designed to appreciate the troops and their families, offering a chance for officers and soldiers to unwind after a challenging year.
He highlighted the Brigade’s operational successes in the FCT and neighboring states, including Nasarawa and Niger. Onasanya also expressed gratitude for the patience and resilience of the troops’ families, who support them through long absences due to operational duties.
“This event also allows us to recognize the invaluable support of the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS, the Civil Defence Corps, and other security agencies that help us achieve our goals,” Onasanya said. “WASA also celebrates the social diversity, cultural values, and rich heritage of Nigeria, in line with the ethos of the Nigerian Army.”
The event featured activities such as a raffle draw, tug of war, awards presentations, the beating of the retreat, flag-laying ceremonies, and a bonfire night.
Onasanya assured President Tinubu that the Guards Brigade remained highly motivated, committed to its mission, and loyal in its efforts to ensure the safety and security of the FCT and its surrounding areas.
