Kwara Varsity, NDLEA Conduct Drug Test for Students
Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete has announced its collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to begin conducting drug tests for students in a bid to combat drug abuse on campus.
Prof. Mashood Jimba, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of KWASU, revealed this during an interaction with journalists in Ilorin, the state capital. He stated that 500 students were tested on the first day of the initiative, which took place on the university’s Malete campus.
Prof. Jimba commended the NDLEA for its efforts to tackle drug abuse in schools, emphasizing that KWASU is now the second university in Nigeria to implement such a program. He said, “We recently held a flag-off ceremony for the drug test program, organized by the Kwara State government in partnership with the NDLEA.”
The drug test initiative is aimed at identifying students who abuse drugs. Any student who tests positive will be referred for counseling and rehabilitation. While counseling will be provided free of charge, the cost of rehabilitation will be borne by the student’s family.
Jimba reported that on the day of the flag-off, over 500 students underwent testing, with none testing positive for drug use. He further explained that the university is committed to addressing drug abuse through efforts such as intelligence gathering to help tackle the problem on campus.
“As a university, we are doing our best to combat drug abuse, particularly through our intelligence-gathering mechanisms,” Jimba added.
