JUST-IN: Prof. Aisha Maikudi Appointed 7th Substantive UniAbuja VC
The Governing Council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), chaired by Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), has appointed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University. The appointment was announced during the 77th Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
Professor Maikudi’s appointment takes effect from January 1, 2025, and is for a non-renewable tenure of five years. She emerged as the preferred candidate out of 10 shortlisted individuals after an interview conducted by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board of the University.
Prior to her appointment, Professor Aisha Maikudi served as the Acting Vice-Chancellor from July 5, 2024, where she played a crucial role in stabilizing the University amid a challenging crisis. Her leadership during this period was recognized for its exceptional commitment and ability to navigate difficult circumstances.
Born on January 31, 1983, in Katsina State, Professor Maikudi is a distinguished scholar and professor of International Law at UniAbuja. She has an extensive academic background, having earned her LLB from the University of Reading, an LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a PhD in International Law from UniAbuja.
Her career at the University of Abuja began in 2008 as a Lecturer II, and she rose through the ranks to become a professor in 2021. She made history as the first female Head of the Department of International Law in 2013, the first female Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law in 2018, and the pioneer Director of the University’s International Centre in 2019. In her role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), she contributed significantly to enhancing academic standards and promoting a culture of excellence.
Professor Maikudi is also known for her innovative contributions, such as introducing the ‘United Nations Law’ course at UniAbuja in 2019, and her extensive research and publications in academic journals and books. She has represented the University and Nigeria at numerous international conferences and workshops across the UK, US, South Africa, Germany, and other countries.
Active in various professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), Professor Maikudi’s leadership is expected to usher in a new era of progress and transformation at the University of Abuja.
