Report Predicts Nigeria’s Population to Hit 237m by 2025
A new report from the United Nations, as estimated by Worldometer, predicts that Nigeria’s population will reach 237,527,782 by 2025, marking an increase of 235,072,214 from the population recorded in December 2024.
The report also highlights a population increase of 4,796,533 in Nigeria between 2023 and 2024.
According to the data, Nigeria ranks sixth in the world in terms of population size, accounting for 2.85% of the total global population. The report further provides figures for the country’s most populous cities, listing Lagos with 15,388,000 people, Kano with 4,910,000, Ibadan with 3,649,000, Abuja with 2,690,000, and Port Harcourt with 2,120,000.
The report emphasizes that 53.9% of Nigeria’s population, equivalent to 125,447,884 people, reside in urban areas as of 2024.
Population density in Nigeria is reported to be 255 per square kilometer (662 people per square mile), with the total land area of the country being 910,770 square kilometers (351,650 square miles).
The report also provides insights into demographic factors, noting that the median age in Nigeria is 17.9 years, and the life expectancy at birth for both sexes is 54.6 years. Life expectancy is slightly higher for females at 54.9 years compared to 54.3 years for males.
Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates, released on Monday, indicate that the world’s population increased by more than 71 million people in 2024, a slight slowdown from the 75 million increase recorded in 2023. According to the new data, the world population is projected to reach 8.09 billion by Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
