Accidental Discharge by Policeman Kills Woman in Ekiti
A tragic incident occurred in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, when a young woman named Ifeoluwa Adekalu was killed by a bullet from an accidental discharge of a police officer’s firearm. The incident took place at the Okela Police Station on Thursday.
Reports indicate that the policeman, who was visiting the station, unintentionally discharged his weapon while celebrating the news of a colleague’s promotion. The bullet tragically struck Adekalu, a mother of one. The exact location where the incident occurred remains unclear, with conflicting accounts suggesting that the woman was either in front of a salon opposite the police station, returning from paying her accommodation rent, or at the station to visit her husband who was in detention at the time.
Adekalu was rushed to a nearby hospital, but she later succumbed to the injuries from the gunshot.
In response to the incident, the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the details and stated that the officer involved has been disarmed and detained. He further assured that the officer would undergo interrogation in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act.
The incident has sparked concern over safety protocols within police stations and the conduct of officers while handling firearms.
