INEC Denies Plan to Destroy 6 Million Uncollected PVCs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports suggesting that it planned to destroy six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs). In a statement posted on its official X handle (formerly Twitter), INEC clarified that it had never considered such an action.

The report, published by an unnamed newspaper, claimed that INEC was contemplating a policy to withdraw and destroy PVCs that have remained uncollected for a decade. The story further stated that this recommendation was part of 208 proposals from the commission’s review of the 2023 general elections.

In response, INEC stated: “Our attention has been drawn to a newspaper report that the Commission is contemplating the destruction of over six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) going back to the 2015 voter registration. The report is incorrect. At no time did the Commission contemplate the destruction of uncollected PVCs. The public is advised to discountenance the story.”

The commission reassured the public that there were no such plans to destroy PVCs and urged citizens to disregard the misleading information.
