Suspected Vandals of Abuja Highway Sewage Manhole Covers Arrested

Security agencies have arrested several suspects involved in the theft of sewage manhole covers from highways in Abuja. Efforts are ongoing to track down their collaborators, particularly those purchasing the stolen manhole covers.

This development was revealed by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant (Public Communications and New Media) to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, in a statement released on Sunday.

According to Olayinka, following directives from Minister Wike, relevant authorities are working diligently to address the rampant vandalism. The Minister expressed deep concern over the criminal activity, describing it as a threat to public safety. “It is disheartening that criminals would remove sewage manhole covers from highways and sell them, endangering the lives of road users,” he said, vowing that the government would take all necessary actions to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Minister Wike also emphasized the absurdity of using public funds to install such vital infrastructure, only for it to be stolen and sold by individuals who disregard the danger their actions pose to the public.

In closing, Wike thanked Nigerians for their vigilance, particularly commending the individual who recorded and shared a video that helped raise awareness of the vandalism. This act, according to Olayinka, is a commendable example of patriotism. The public will be updated on further developments as authorities continue their investigation.
