Borno Approves Renaming Of State Varsity To Kashim Ibrahim

Considers House Numbering, Street Naming

The Borno State Executive Council has approved the renaming of the state-owned university to Kashim Ibrahim University, in honor of the first governor of the defunct Northern Nigeria Region, Kashim Ibrahim. The decision was made during the first State Executive Council (SEC) meeting of 2025, chaired by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

The meeting, held at the Government House Council Chamber, lasted over six hours and covered various key issues affecting the state. Following the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, briefed the press, revealing that the council had reviewed 42 memos and assessed the performance of the state government in 2024. Projections for 2025 were also discussed.

Professor Tar explained that the renaming of the university would require legislative procedures and coordination with the Ministry of Education. “Council approved that Borno State University shall be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. This is subject to further legislative work by the State Assembly to amend the law establishing the university,” he said. The Ministry of Education will also take necessary actions, including informing relevant regulatory authorities such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

The council also approved a major urban renewal initiative, including the naming of streets and numbering of houses in Maiduguri and other urban areas. This initiative is aimed at enhancing urban planning and governance under Governor Zulum’s administration. “Maiduguri is fast developing, with many new buildings, public roads, and facilities needing naming,” Tar noted. He added that the relevant agencies, including the Nigerian Postal Service and Nigerian Geological Survey, along with traditional rulers and community leaders, would collaborate on a new naming template for the state. The updated names will be reflected in official records, public directories, and Google Maps.

Governor Zulum, while welcoming council members into the new year, commended them for their dedication to the administration’s projects. He emphasized his focus on scaling up post-conflict and post-flood recovery efforts in 2025, building on the progress made in 2024.

The meeting also included a valedictory session for the outgoing Head of Service, Barrister Malam Fannami, who will retire later this month. The council expressed appreciation for his contributions to the state’s development.
