Cybercrime: NPF Recovers Over Eight Billion Naira and Prosecutes 751 Suspects in 2024
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reported significant achievements in its fight against cybercrime in 2024. The National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) successfully recovered a total of N8,821,001,881.80, 115,237.91 USDT, and $84,000 from cybercriminals. These funds were returned to their rightful owners, according to Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday.
In the past year, the Cybercrime Unit of the NPF carried out strategic operations, leading to the arrest and prosecution of over 751 suspects involved in cybercrime. The unit also seized 685 devices used in these illicit activities, including 467 mobile phones, 137 laptops and computers, 46 routers, 4 servers, 1 drone, and 4 Starlink devices.
Additionally, the police operations resulted in the confiscation of 16 houses, 39 plots of land, 14 land documents, and 26 vehicles, all of which were linked to the cybercriminal activities.
As a testament to its success, the NPF-NCCC was recognized by INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate in Singapore as the Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa for 2024, ranking first among 54 participating African nations. This achievement highlights the NPF’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and ensuring the safety of citizens in the digital space.
The NPF-NCCC has also apprehended four more suspects—Douglass Victor, Egbo Efe Martins, Lucky Adesunloye, and Ndifreke Joseph Moody—for various cyber-related offenses.
The Nigeria Police remains dedicated to combating cyber threats and strengthening the nation’s cybersecurity framework to protect citizens in the digital era.
