EFCC’s Brutal Tactics Leave Footprints of Human Rights Abuses

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), charged with investigating financial crimes like internet fraud, has been accused of using aggressive and abusive tactics during operations, leading to numerous cases of harassment, assault, and arbitrary arrests. This report sheds light on the toll these methods have taken on innocent citizens.

One such victim, Agabi, a 31-year-old resident of Kwalkwalawa in Sokoto State, was asleep with his pregnant wife when EFCC operatives raided his apartment on August 25, 2023. The operatives, on a mission to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters, broke down his door, confiscated his devices, and forced him to their office for interrogation. Despite finding no evidence against him, Agabi was treated harshly, threatened, and his name was later published on the EFCC’s website. The stress of the raid contributed to his wife losing their pregnancy.

This incident is not isolated. Over the years, the EFCC’s tactics, especially in its pursuit of internet fraud suspects, have sparked outrage. Citizens, including celebrities and public figures, have shared stories of intrusion, harassment, and violence at the hands of the commission. Some have been subjected to physical abuse, unlawful searches, and public humiliation, with little recourse or accountability for the EFCC.

Legal experts draw comparisons between the EFCC’s methods and those of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), known for its use of excessive force and violations of human rights. These tactics have led to protests and calls for reform, particularly regarding the commission’s focus on internet fraudsters, often targeting university students and hotel guests.

Despite a leadership change in June 2023, under new head Ola Olukoyede, the EFCC’s approach has not shifted, and accusations of abuse continue. Citizens, including victims like Chukwudi, whose personal belongings were seized during an EFCC raid, are left frustrated by the commission’s actions, often unable to hold the agency accountable. Many, like Norah Okafor, have resorted to legal action, but enforcement of court rulings remains inconsistent.

The EFCC’s unchecked actions have left a trail of victims, raising concerns about the agency’s methods and the need for reform to prevent further violations of human rights.
