North-Central Demands Inclusion in N2.4 Trillion Regional Commissions’ Budget

The 2025 budget allocation of N2.4 trillion for regional commissions has sparked controversy due to the exclusion of the North-Central geopolitical zone.

While the budget proposes significant funding for other regions, including N585.9 billion for the North West Development Commission, N498.4 billion for the South West Development Commission, N341.2 billion for the South East Development Commission, and N291 billion for the North East Development Commission, the North-Central zone was notably left out. This exclusion has led to concerns regarding fairness, equity, and political representation.

The North-Central People’s Forum, through its Secretary-General, Mr. Khaleel Bolaji, expressed frustration over the region’s omission. Bolaji highlighted the long-standing marginalization of the region and voiced disappointment that allocations were made to regions without final presidential approval of their respective commissions—something he believes should have applied to both the South-West and North-Central.

Bolaji called for the North-Central’s inclusion in the budget, stressing the importance of equitable development for all regions. He noted that with its six states and the Federal Capital Territory, the North-Central region plays a crucial role in maintaining national unity due to its diverse ethnic groups and strategic location at the heart of the country.

Similarly, Mr. Sule-Dikcson Audu, a spokesperson for the region, pointed out the challenges faced by the North-Central, including insecurity, environmental crises, and economic difficulties. Audu suggested that the exclusion may have been an oversight and urged for the region’s inclusion to ensure fair representation in national development. He emphasized that the establishment of a North-Central Development Commission would complement the efforts of both state and federal governments in addressing the region’s development needs.

With the budget still under review, there is an opportunity for the National Assembly to make amendments and include provisions for the North-Central Development Commission, ensuring more equitable development across the country.
