1 Dies in Early Morning Accident in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified driver of a Lagos Intra-City bus died in an early morning accident on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The incident occurred near the state Secretariat, heading toward Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, according to a statement from the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq.

The crash involved a mini bus colliding with a long truck due to brake failure caused by excessive speeding. The severe impact left the bus driver trapped in the wreckage.

Adebayo reported that the swift and coordinated intervention of LASTMA officers ensured the immediate rescue of all passengers, all of whom were unharmed. Despite their best efforts, LASTMA officers, along with personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were unable to save the driver, who was recovered lifeless. His remains were later handed over to FRSC personnel.

Security operatives from the Alausa Police Division were also present to ensure the safety of those involved in the rescue operation, according to Adebayo.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and warned against excessive speeding. He stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly in maintaining safe speeds and proper vehicle maintenance.

“This heartbreaking incident serves as a profound reminder of the dire consequences of reckless driving,” Bakare-Oki said. He urged all road users to prioritize safety and exercise caution while driving.

LASTMA remains committed to promoting safer roads and preventing avoidable tragedies, Bakare-Oki concluded.
