Police Officer Converts to Islam Two Years After Rejecting $200k Bribe in Kano

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Daniel Amah, who became a national hero after rejecting a $200,000 bribe nearly three years ago, has formally converted to Islam in a private ceremony held at the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, marked Amah’s formal embrace of Islam, with the officer adopting the name ‘Muhammad’ following his conversion.

During the event, Emir Sanusi II offered Amah guidance, encouraging him to seek knowledge of Islam and to faithfully observe its core practices, including the five pillars: belief in Allah, the five daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca, and Zakat (charitable giving).

Addressing Amah in Hausa, the Emir prayed for Allah’s blessings upon him, wishing him success in his new faith. He also advised the newly converted Muslim to uphold the exemplary character that had earned him national recognition, urging him to remain respectful and obedient to his parents, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Daniel Amah first rose to national prominence in April 2022, when he was serving as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Nasarawa Police Division in Kano State. At that time, he rejected a $200,000 bribe offered by armed robbery suspects involved in a high-profile theft. The suspects, led by Ali Zaki, had robbed a Bureau De Change (BDC) operator who was carrying $750,000 in cash. Amah’s decision to refuse the bribe was widely celebrated as a significant act of integrity.

In recognition of his honesty, the Police Service Commission (PSC) promoted Amah from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to Assistant Commissioner of Police on November 10, 2022. In addition, Amah received the prestigious 2022 Public Service Integrity Award from then-President Muhammadu Buhari. The award came following a recommendation by the former chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, in a letter dated September 13, 2022.
